Towards AI Literacy in the Art Classroom: A Curation Project

This project presents an educational initiative aimed at addressing the need for AI education in the art classroom. The primary objective of the project is to enhance understanding of AI, develop critical skills, and address biases in AI systems, all while promoting responsible implementation within the art class. Throughout this project, students are being introduced to the fundamental concepts of AI, watching the accompanying documentary, and exploring the educational materials and resources.

Specifically, the educational unit invites students to act as curators of a virtual exhibition, where they assume the responsibility of creating exhibits that highlight biases present in AI systems. They are using an AI system of their choice to generate lists of artworks based on a given theme and then critically analyzing the biases present in the results. By emphasizing the importance of critical research practices and promoting inclusivity and diversity in the exhibitions, students are correcting and enhancing the suggestions provided by the AI.

Consequently, the project enables students to challenge algorithmic ways of presenting the visual world, shedding light on additional perspectives and artworks during the creation of their exhibition. The exhibitions crafted by the students thus serve as comprehensive educational tools, making their learning evident and informing those who explore their online curatorial spaces.Make it stand out.
