But can I use this? Copyright Education in the Art Classroom

This ongoing research project investigates teachers’ current understandings and practices in teaching copyright with the goal of eventually developing new pedagogical resources.

Sharing images, videos, and sounds has become some of the primary ways people communicate, and a large part of this takes place on social and mobile media. Although these widespread multimodal forms of interactions directly impact all taught subjects in schools, they have specific implications for the art classroom and other creative disciplines regarding ethics and copyright. Students are accustomed to quickly sending pictures they find online to friends or editing videos in social media apps using the sounds available on the platforms. These habits often filter into the classroom. Although these practices are accepted in social media creations, technology and remixing culture raise complex questions regarding copyright. How do these digital communications and creative practices transmute to the art classroom? How should art teachers navigate these practices, and where does copyright apply?
